Review: Darksiders

Darksiders PS3

Title: Darksiders
Publisher/Develolper: THQ/Vigil Games
Release Date: 01/05/2010
Platforms: Playstation 3, Xbox 360
Number of Players: Single-player

The third person action genre is getting a lot of love of late, what with the recent release of Bayonetta, and the forthcoming releases of God of War III and Dante’s Inferno. Darksiders though, is a bit different. It’s a fascinating and somewhat compelling take with a distinct mixture of action, adventure, puzzle solving and storytelling. It’s certainly not perfect, but it does what it does very well.

Red Faction: Guerilla, a symphony of destruction

Monday, July 20th, 2009 by The ReanimatedFish

Red Faction: Guerilla

Title: Red Faction: Guerrilla
Publisher/Developer: THQ/Volition
Platforms: PC, Playstation 3, Xbox
Release Date: 06/02/2009
Number of players/Multiplayer: 1 player, online multiplayer support (21 maps up to 16 players)

Red Faction: Guerilla is a sand-box game that brings the classic struggle for the freedom of a colony from an oppressive motherland to life in a vibrant 3-D version of Mars. This is the third Red Faction title. I’ll not spoil your character’s motivation for joining the Red Faction, but I will say that the game provides you ample reasons to run around Mars, steal cars and blow stuff up. The story is not a tear jerker of an epic tail and in that regard it falls short of what it could have been. Guerilla improves on its predecessors’ notion of a completely destructible environment by moving the game play from the cryptic corridors and military bases to the open surface of Mars. This game eschews the claustrophobia of the previous Red Faction titles in favor of the great wide open spaces of the Martian Surface.

PS3 Getting Exclusive CE of Smackdown vs Raw 2009

Monday, October 27th, 2008 by Matt Cross

Here’s a bit of good news for you PS3 owners who love to hand out powerbombs and choke slams! THQ just announced that coming exclusively to the Playstation 3 would be the Collector’s Edition of Smackdown vs. Raw 2009!

The US version of the CE comes packaged in a mock steel cage style, while the European and Asian versions get a mini wrestling right. Sounds pretty cool actually. My only questions is why they are limiting the CE to just the PS3? It’s cutting out over half the market for that in my opinion, but it could prove well for them, so its a chance they must be willing to take.

Hit the jump for the full press release!

Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise Review

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 by Zach Potts

Viva Pinata: Pocket Paradise for the Nintendo DS does a good job of replicating the Xbox’s experience, giving players the ability to maintain your own garden and taking care of your very own piñata friends. Can you attract the best piñatas?

The game starts off introducing you to your new garden, which is just a bunch of rocks, but, through a variety of tutorials that span just about every feature in the game, you learn the ropes and start to work building your piñata empire. The first thing to do is take out your shovel and flatten those rocks out, and then plant some grass. Doing all of these things is very simple, as you tap on the icon in the upper right corner to open up your inventory bar, which is sectioned off for your convenience. Then you can choose whatever implement you would like and have at it. You simply tap and hold to plant or whack something, and move the stylus around where you want the action to be performed.

Red Faction: Guerilla Info

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 by Zach Potts

Video footage, spliced with developer info. Here, you’ll get a bit about the story and the gameplay. Unfortunately, at least for me I guess, the game has been switched from 1st person to 3rd, but luckily, the game retains its destructible environments which made the series great. If it’s got the right weapons and decent enemy AI, then it’ll make for one entertaining game. I have high hopes.

Battle of the Bands Review

Saturday, June 21st, 2008 by Zach Potts

Battle of the Bands is an interesting twist on the music genre, where the main focus is attacking your opponent and winning over the audience with your own take on famous songs.

The game is not played with a guitar or any other peripheral, but instead simply with the Wii Remote. There are a total of five moves that you can perform to match the on-screen queues, which include shaking the wiimote to the right, shaking it to the left, shaking it downwards, making a stabbing motion towards the screen, and waggling the wiimote quickly side to side. These moves require no button presses, but merely movement of the wiimote.

Age of Empires coming to DS

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008 by Zach Potts

Age of Empires: Mythologies, from Backbone Entertainment and Majesco, is heading to the DS this fall.

This RTS will allow players to assume the role of mythological heroes, commanding massive armies, and shaping three separate cultures; the Egyptians, Greeks, and Norse.

The game will also feature an extensive multiplayer mode, complete with single-card play, skirmish mode, customizable rules, and numerous maps to play on.

Sounds pretty cool, especially as there aren’t too many RTS’s on the system.
